Gallery: Manara does Marvel

Continuing with the European master doing work for the American market thread started yesterday, we turn our attention to Milo Manara, the “master of erotic comics”. This one is a bit of a strange case … I mean, the jump from doing his European album thing to working with Neil Gaiman for Sandman: Endless Nights was more or less reasonable (after all, he illustrated the chapter dedicated to Desire and we have to consider other artists like Prado or Storey worked on it, too). Then it gets a bit weird, as he decided to work on X-Women with Chris Claremont, which I find quite puzzling (but, hey, the X-Men being a best-seller with a couple of movies and the chance to work with the writer who made them what they are must have been an incentive … apart from some crazy money, of course). Which brings us to the present. A present where he is doing Marvel covers every month these days (10 and counting). A present where we have a cover featuring an illustration of Angela by Milo Manara in a comic published by Disney. Who could have foreseen this 10 years ago? Surely, this is how it must have felt when the multiverse merged into a single universe at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Anyway, you are here for the covers, so here they are:

As a bonus, the other two covers he did for Vampirella and Verotik Illustrated, if only because they make a lot more sense:

A week of art (Spanish edition): Carlos Pacheco

There’s not much I can tell you about Carlos Pacheco that hasn’t been said before, originally from Spain he jumped from Marvel UK to the US and has worked on almost all the big titles and even published creator owned stuff. So, keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at his beginnings doing covers and pin-ups for Comics Forum (the Spanish publisher of Marvel comics during the 80’s and 90’s).

Here’s an assortment of his covers for Clasicos Marvel (a series that reprinted classic Marvel arcs). I guess most of you will have no problems to identify which arcs they are for:

And some other covers and pin-ups from other series:

New Frank Quitely next week: Jupiter’s Legacy

It’s spring (and starting to feel like it), Friday and we have new Quitely coming next week, so it’s clearly Frank Quitely gallery time …

Probably one of the only Artists working in comics, this guy can draw anything and it’s a fucking miracle we still get comics from him, so enjoy him while it lasts. Hopefully, Jupiter’s Legacy will be good. Mark Millar’s run on The Authority is still one of my favorite runs of anything ever, but I am not really enjoying Millar’s latest work … In any case, the art will make this a pleasure for the eye, so I am in for the whole run.

Digressing here, but how disappointing was it that Quitely only drew the first 3 issues of Batman and Robin? Following him with Philip Tan, really?

Friday, spring, … I tried to get some of his lesser known stuff in here, so enjoy:

A week of art: Aaron kuder

Time to highlight Mr. Aaron Kuder, already working for the big ones and with a great style that reminds the stylings of Frank Quitely or Tony Moore. Like the other artists featured this week, we can’t wait to see anything new that gets published …
